MICHELLE HETZEL, BRANDON BLOSS: SHAM MARRIAGES FOR ALL

HOW THE SUCKY STORY STARTS One night in June 2000, Keary Renner answered the door of her Easton, Pennsylvania residence to find Michelle Hetzel angry and asking the whereabouts of their mutual friend -- and mutual on- and off-girlfriend -- Devon Guzman, 19. According to Michelle, Devon was two hours overdue for their date and not answering her pager. Michelle insisted that they file a missing persons report; Keary resisted. The two women then took Michelle's car to initiate a search for Devon, eventually locating her vehicle at Delaware Canal State Park. Devon's corpse was discovered in the backseat posed to resemble a suicide. A small kitchen knife and syringe were found on the body; the county coroner noted a "massive gaping laceration" to her throat.

HOW EINSTEIN BLEW IT Police initially fingered Keary for the murder following her account of a violent row with Devon earlier that night. But evidence soon mounted against Michelle: Investigators detected traces of blood in her washing machine wherein lay jeans with a syringe cap in the pocket; a search of her car (a part of the crime scene) yielded more bloody clothes. Later, police found a bandage in her garbage suggestive of use for a human bite wound.

THE LENGTHS TO WHICH THIS GENIUS WENT It was Michelle who got the ball rolling by urging Keary to consider the tardy Devon a missing person; the search was also her idea, yet she waited in the car as Keary discovered Devon's body. Oh, and the case's big break came when an area man told police that he hosted and supplied alcohol to the three underage women. After one such get-together, he stated, Devon and Keary left behind a jealous Michelle; Michelle then propositioned the man for a sex-for-murder swap.

WAIT SRSLY? The story gets screwy from here. Though each woman was in love with Devon -- and occasionally with each other -- Keary and Michelle had husbands. Keary wed a military man stationed abroad in order to make Devon jealous and to monopolize her affections. Michelle, not to be outdone, attempted the same by marrying her foster mother's son, pushover science nerd Brandon Bloss. But she was still seeing Devon though Devon lived with Keary.

WHY THE MURDERING? See, when Michelle first roused Keary to search for their missing girlfriend, she'd already helped to kill Devon. Things had come to a head after a secret tryst in St. Croix in the Virgin Islands, where Devon and Michelle had exchanged rings and pledges to shed their respective partners upon return. But back in Pennsylvania, it was no dice for Michelle as her love Devon continued living with Keary and her sham husband continued to fume over the infidelities, confrontations, and the fact that he was left to bankroll his harried wife's attempts to wrest Devon away from Keary.

THE VERDICT Defensive wounds on Devon's hands pointed to a struggle; the bloody bandage led authorities to a bite wound on Brandon's arm consistent with Devon's dentition. Prosecution posited that, after having departed Michelle and Brandon's home with Keary, Devon returned to be confronted by the jealous couple. The throat-slashing is thought to have been carried out by Brandon; a neighbor reported that Brandon spent the next day using a hose in their backyard. The syringe and its cap were traced to Michelle's former workplace, a doctor's office. Each was sentenced to life with no parole.

MURDER TONY SEZ "Ugh this case has enough head-spinning teen drama to confuse authorities, yet it's still an offensively inept homicide. I dig a love triangle (or quadrangle) cuz chances are that somebody is in bed with you by night's end. But it doesn't work if each participant is jealous and possessive. That's way dumb, so it follows that brainiac Michelle wasn't an adept schemer. Same for Brandon, a guy easily duped, cuckholded, and manipulated to murder (partly) on a total jerk's behalf; if he's prone to all that, he's sure to suck at disposing of evidence. Leave it to the pros, ladies."

MIKE MURDER SEZ "Quality murder is carried out dispassionately or, failing that, with a considered plan to offset what is generally a heated enterprise. Lovelorn, hormonal teenagers aren't predisposed to discretion, so murder is a tall order. My main beef is the shoddy suicide staging. This is never done right. For one thing, no one has ever slashed their own throat to the spine. The least these greenhorns could have done was put her in the driver's seat. Dumb."

  1. I went to school with Michelle, Devon and Keary. It saddens me to see the life of a young girl who was so sweet to everyone loose her life to a horrific incident like this. Never did I ever imagine Michelle who I sat next to in Spanish class was capable of this horrific crime. I guess you never really know the real demons of people. I believe Brandon and Michelle got what they deserved. Justice was served!

    3. It's true, you never know who will be the one to go to such lengths as to murder another. I live in a small town and when I heard about the murder of a military man that was killed by two guys I went to high school with, I was shocked, but I also knew that at least one of them was a bit of a bully. I hate when people say things about the murderers like, "They seemed like such a nice person," or "They never did anything bad, they were a good kid," because I just don't believe that crap. It's obvious to me that the people who say those things about murderers never saw the mean things they did to others before they took to killing someone or never realized what a bad person they really were.

I've been up to Easton several times in the past couple of years just to check out some things there related to the Devon Guzman murder. I was doing some research for a screenplay I was thinking of writing about Devon.

    6. A screenplay would be weird, but not all information in the story above is correct. Keary's husband filed for divorce, because he also had a girlfriend during that time that lived in NJ.He didn't follow through with the divorce until several years later. Also, Keary's husband wasn't stationed abroad. He was in the field where he was stationed in Upstate New York where he and his girlfriend at the time were living off base. If you want to make a movie, please do the proper research so this young gal's life isn't made a mockery of and so Keary doesn't look like a lying and cheating wife with a girlfriend on the side.

  8. Poor Devon, rest in peace. Also I hope that Keary has found peace and love in her young life, as this must have been horrific for her as well as Devons family. I hope that Michelle and Brandon see Devons face in every blink they make whilst awake and when they close their eyes at night. An innocent victim of 2 evil vultures, may you rot in hell for your crime.

    1. Michelle is a cold hearted killer and can lie without batting an eye. I very much doubt that she sees Devons face in every blink or in any waking moment. I can say this because I knew Michelle and Devon very well and know how evil and controlling Michelle has always been. During my time living in Easton, before the murder, I had known Michelle and Deveon when they were in Jr High until Devon's death. Michelle sickens me and I truly believe both her and brandon were guilty and deserve what they got. Hopefully Devon has found peace in death; however, for those of us who knew Devon well, the memory of such a special person will always linger on. Just a thought.

  9. If Michelle did see her in every blink also, don't you think she'd love it though? I mean Devon was her on-again-off-again lover, right? Also, if her husband really was a push over he had to of known the difference between right and wrong but he did it anyway. Cold blooded murder. And he was her foster brother? Personally I think, red flag right there.

  13. I just saw the story on "Forensic Files" - aired on a local channel in South Africa. Indeed, a sad story for the victims, namely, Devon, Keary and their families. A point to ponder: how many more of these tragedies have gone unsolved? In South Africa, a life sentence is 25 years (max) and most "get out" in as little as 5. There is no death penalty here, and as a former Philadelphian, life here is a relatively cheap commodity.

  14. To understand what state of mind, can cause someone to do such horrendous things:
    1) Everyone needs acceptance and to feel secure and loved.
    2) When you are GLBT and your family is 100% against it, you are torn between who you love and who you feel you must be.
    3) When you are afraid of being disowned by family, you are more likely to do evil in order to get rid of the temptation that would cause you to be disowned by family.
    4) He was a psychopath and perhaps (but don't know for sure) he was afraid he'd lose face if he lost his wife to a lesbian.
    5) Devon was leaving for good, as she really wanted to get a good life and realized she wasn't having it.
    6) Because of #5, Michelle, in my mind, was torn between her feelings of love for Devon, and her fear of losing the one person in her life who said loved her. And, I think in this state of mind, HE could control Michelle's mind, and make her do whatever he wanted.

I think that whats to blame here is Him (a pyschopath), family (for not accepting Michelle for who she was), and soceity (because society still discriminates against, is prejudice against and treats badly GLBT community.)

Yes, this is changing quickly. However, there is still a huge pressure to be straight and to get GLBT feeling overwith as quickly as possible.

With this said, I still support Michelle in prison. I'd only would let her out, after many years of PTSD therapy and therapy to help her deal with society's mores, her family's mores, and life. She clearly isn't capable of controlling herself, her beliefs, and her own body and mind. But all this is my opinion. He, I would never let out of prison. He just seems to controlling. She was a victim of his control tactics. She would have been better off with Devon in the first place. I'd also like to say that there relationships tell me that alcohol is best left alone.

Reading all the BS and those defending Michelle are sickening. To the one that "supports" her to this day, your commisary dollars are most likely being spent for her to write and pursue another love. She gets to live, eat, breathe, love in prison. Devon doesn't. Devon is the only victim in this. RIP Devon

I recall how she use to call her mother a bitch, pull her mother's hair, yell at her father, throw things at them when she didn't get her way. In the end, they would always let her have her way. She was so spoiled and got everything she demanded from them. I will always remember how embarrassed her parents were and I always felt sorry for them. Her murdering someone is another example of her true character which will never change. She is trying to demand her way out of prison by pretending to do good. She should have tried that before subjecting others to her deathly choices, it is now too late for the families involved. Leave her and her husband in prison, it is the best thing for society.

  38. I watched this story on Discovery ID last night. Ok, so Michelle and her husband got what they deserved, but let's be honest: Devon wasn't innocent either. She was relating to two married women, and played them all the time. Devon was a total bitch, always pretending to like/love one of them, and never making up her mind about who she wanted to be with. She was as despicable as her murderers.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well she was 19 years old. Everybody makes mistakes but should be allowed the opportunity to correct them; Devon was not. She didn't deserve to die like you seem to be implying. And anyway, it sounded like she planned on cutting things off and committing to Keary, which was probably Michelle's motivation for doing what she did. What a sad story.

      Delete
    2. You really think someone who is involved with women who married other men to provoke jealousy are as bad as murderers?
I never met her, don't know if she was a good or a bad person, but she was romantically involved with those girls before either one of them was married. And NO ONE cheats alone. If those two girls, Keary and Michelle were cheating on their husbands with Devon, it was not ONLY Devon's fault. Either way, nothing that happened was an excuse to take someones life.

      Delete
    3. She still didn't deserve to be murdered. No matter what she was guilty of.

    4. For anyone to say that Devon was at fault for having been murdered merely because she was romantically involved with two females is wrong and, quite frankly, mad disrespectful. No one deserves being murdered for having more than one love interest. No one really knows who pursued whom, how their love triangle developed and ultimately dismantled—except for the three of them.
And for those who think that Michelle wasn’t culpable of the murder, I vehemently disagree and implore you to consider the facts. She had the free will to make one of two choices: remain in a relationship with both Devon, as well as, her husband —or— distance herself from Devon and either focus on her marriage or pursue a divorce. Instead, Michelle chose to draw Devon into her web by inviting her over and then tag-teaming her in the back yard. Maybe Michelle didn’t wield the knife, but she may have helped hold her down. Devon fought back hard. That’s evident by her defense wounds and her DNA found on the bandage that dressed Bloss’ wound. And even if Michelle was merely present and hadn’t lifted a damn finger to assist her husband with the cold-blooded murder of a 19 year old girl, in the eyes of the law, she is equally guilty. She is an accessory to the viscous slaying of that unsuspecting, defenseless teenager. Death by asphyxiation is a horrific manner in which to die. Starvation for air isn’t a quick means of ending one’s life. The process is anywhere between 3-4 minutes, which must have felt like hours. Additionally, a gaping laceration to the neck is indicative of pure sadistic evil and depravity.
If Hetzel had even the smallest hint of remorse, she sure as hell didn’t show it when she took Kearry around town in search of Devon, knowing full well that she was going to let Kearry discover the body.
Those two are right where they belong. Murder doesn’t allow any second chances for murder victims. They aren’t even given the choice to live or the manner in which they meet their demise so why should Hetzel or Bloss be given anything remotely similar to a choice or second chance?
I used to believe that the death sentence was the way to go. Exterminate them! I have, however, concluded that existing behind prison’s 4 walls is most likely the best option. Time only goes by quickly for those who have fun. Prison isn’t fun. Despite the little menial tasks inmates may be assigned to do, their lives consist of jumpsuits and tennis shoes, tattered, starchy blankets and flat pillows. The prison eau de parfum is nauseating, as is their three meals. Recess on the yard’s blacktop behind fortified fence and barbed wire. Solitary confinement is especially torturous since humans aren’t wired to be alone and bereft of human contact. Twenty-three hours a day, confined to a space not much larger than a standard bathroom is psychological warfare. Only sixty minutes of daylight and otherwise alone with not much more than thoughts and memories of a once carefree life and the deep craving for the most insignificant of creature comforts is torture. It is within our human nature to want what we cannot have. Someone tells you that you can no longer have something and without question, you’ll find yourself thinking of nothing other than what you were told you couldn’t have.
Prisoners are miserable. Their psyches have merely adapted to the fact that they’re incarcerated. It’s a defense mechanism manufactured by our brains as means to cope with such situations.
Hetzel and Bloss will spend all of what is left of their lives thinking about what they did, how they did it, and that, in and of itself, is their true punishment.
Rest in heavenly peace, Devon. I’m so, so sorry this happened to you sweet girl. 💜

  40. I was watching this on Lifetime & I think Brandon killed her & Michelle was there just arguing with her, but I don't think she was the one who killed her, but she covered up the crime so she should be charged for that.

  41. Saw this case on I Killed My BFF. What a strange situation. Drama to the max, with messed up people. I was wondering about Brandon Bloss. Back in the 1980-90's my father dated a woman with that last name. She lived on a side road off of the main thoroughfare. I was wondering if Brandon was maybe her grandson. It's amazing how seemingly everyday people can end up in such strange situations.

Besides, the picture is so much bigger..
A person died! At the hands of two other people. That's the real tragedy.
Not whether or not, somebody can spell a word.

  45. Brandon always struck me as a little unstable, but what depths can a man be moved to when not only cuckolded but also unmanned? I've been in a similar situation and it really depends on the force of the female to motivate/berate/shame the individual to to such actions.

  46. Such a sad, sad crime. Michelle and her husband deserve to spend their lives in prison. Heck, they deserve worse. Devon didn't even have a chance at life, everyone deserves that chance. She was a very beautiful girl who seemed like a real sweetheart. Condolences to her family.

  52. George Vines testified that Michelle was trying to hire someone to kill Devon. When that failed, she turned to Brandon. Michelle is devious. She pointed the finger solely at her husband, Brandon Bloss. She was the mastermind behind Devon'so murder. She wrote and helped to execute the entire murder plot.

She had the audacity to try for an early release on the grounds of being a teenager at the time of the murder. However, she was 18 at the time of the murder and the cutoff age is 17.

She was old enough to pull off a murderous plot. Therefore, I believe that her brain was mature enough to do the time sentenced, life without parole.

She seemed to enjoy leading her friend to Devon's body. She deserves to be physically tortured on a daily basis for the remainder of her life. She should be water boarded.

  54. So just wondering if anyone else thinks that while Michelle helped Brandon she then tried to frame him so she could be with Keary. Why else leave his blood soaked clothes in the car but wash her own? Just a thought.

  55. For those who want to point so much at Brandon you are forgetting Michell WORKED for a DR.. Michelle got the syringe there and probably drugged Devon or tried to, to subdue her. So please, let's not point only to Brandon. And yes anyone who can mastermind murder can't say her "brain wasn't developed ". She is still showing no remorse. Still manipulating.... being sorry is the first step to rehabilitation which Michelle knows nothing about. She is a sad sorry psychopath

  59. I worked with Brandon Bliss at Ashland Chemical Co., on Island Park Rd. in Easton. On the day after the murders, I saw him in the break room and asked him about the bandage on his arm, which he claimed was from a burn. I didn't know about the murders yet. The next day, I came to work and the parking lot was filled with police cars. I thought maybe their had been some kind of chemical event. When I got inside the building, I was told that Brandon was arrested in connection with a murder. I didn't really know him very well, but I was shocked.

  62. It is called conspiracy to murder. Michelle lured her there. Brandon likely did it. They are both clearly guilty of malicious murder, not 100% on the degree, but the cover up is mitigating. They deserve nothing less than death. Society is kinder to them than that.
